The REACH Committee of the European Commission has decided for a number of more precise provisions on nanomaterials in the annexes to the European chemicals regulation REACH. Gerd Romanowski, executive director for technical and environmental affairs of the German chemical industry association (VCI), comments this decision: “The adaptations to the rules on how to prepare registration dossiers for nanomaterials in the future bring legal certainty and clarity for the companies.”

Particularly important is the inclusion of a legally binding definition of the term “nanomaterial” in Annex VI to the REACH Regulation. The VCI also supports the adaptation of toxicological and ecotoxicological test requirements to the specific features of nanomaterials. Romanowski underlines: “This improves the quality of information about potential hazards and increases transparency on the properties of nanomaterials in registration dossiers.”

The VCI represents the politico-economic interests of around 1,700 German chemical companies and German subsidiaries of foreign businesses. For this purpose, the VCI is in contact with politicians, public authorities, other industries, science and media. The VCI stands for over 90 percent of the chemical industry in Germany. In 2017 the German chemical industry realised sales of around 196 billion euros and employed over 453,000 staff.
