The Presidential Council of the VCI has appointed Dr Markus Steilemann as the candidate to succeed the incumbent President Christian Kullmann.

The Presidential Council of the German chemical industry association Verband der Chemischen Industrie e. V. (VCI) has appointed Dr Markus Steilemann

(Chief Executive Officer of Covestro AG) as the candidate to succeed the incumbent President Christian Kullmann. Steilemann has been on the VCI Board as Vice-President since March 2020. Furthermore, he has been the President of PlasticsEurope – the pan-European association of plastics manufacturers – since June 2020.

The election of the next VCI President will take place at the general assembly on 29 September 2022 in Berlin. The term in office of the presidency begins on the following day and, in accordance with the statutes, lasts for two years.

Details on the candidate:
Dr Markus Steilemann has been the Chief Executive Officer of Covestro AG headquartered in Leverkusen (Germany) since June 2018. In 1999, he started his professional career with the Bayer Group. From 2008, he held several senior management positions at Bayer MaterialScience, the predecessor organization of Covestro. In 2015, he became a member of the board of Covestro with responsibility for various segments. Steilemann was born in 1970. He studied chemistry and business administration at the RWTH Aachen where he also obtained a doctorate.

The VCI and its sector associations represent the interests of around 1,900 companies from the chemical-pharmaceutical industry and related sectors vis-à-vis politicians, public authorities, other industries, science and media. In 2022, the VCI member companies realised sales of ca. 260 billion euros and employed nearly 550,000 staff.
