The sustainable management of supply chains is not a new trend. There are hundreds of corporate programmes promoting fair labour practices and environmental responsibility throughout global business networks. At the same time, in recent years an increasing number of national legislations have also been addressing supply chain sustainability. The EU proposal for a Directive on corporate sustainability due diligence (CSDD) is an attempt to consolidate and leverage the existing grid of actions and rulebooks.

The approach of the Commission is convincing few: Businesses fear that the proposal will lead to red tape and legal uncertainty but have little effect on the ground, while many civil society organisations are calling for even stricter rules.

Together with MEP Axel Voss, H.E. Ambassador Mahbub Hassan Saleh (Bangladesh), Janina Lukas, Head of Ethics & Social Impact (Bayer) and other panellists we will address the following questions at this event:

  • How do we reach legislation that is fit for purpose?
  • How should we deal with the myriad of existing sectoral supply chain initiatives?
  • What is the view of partner countries on the legislative proposal?
